Shady Lea Grove is a small picnic area on the side of Route 4, right at the intersection of Route 4 and Route 1. Not huge and not quiet, given the proximity to the highway, but a good place to sit and eat a sandwich.

We took a pleasant hike through part of Durfee Hill in early March. The (unpaved) road we walked on was easy to follow, even with a bit of snow on the ground. It's not necessarily the easiest walk, but the area is certainly quiet and peaceful. The only interesting thing we saw was a man-made waterfall, though apparently there's a good place to go
rock climbing somewhere inside Durfee as well. All in all a good place to go for a hike in the woods.
According to the maps I've seen (
here and
here) there are apparently four or five separate areas that comprise Durfee Hill. We were clearly in the largest section; I look forward to exploring the others.

Officially located within Ninigret NWR, the Kettle Pond Visitor's Center is a real gem. Plenty of parking, clean restrooms, two educational rooms (one for activities and another showcasing wildlife from the area) and a convenient gift shop make this a wonder place to begin exploring Ninigret. The trails leaving the visitor center are a pleasure to hike, and the wildlife was abundant. There are even binoculars, wildlife guides and checklists available free at the visitor center! All told a wonderful place to take the kids for a walk to learn about or just enjoy the outdoors.

What a beautiful place to walk and enjoy the birds! The refuge is situated on a peninsula, with a large field in the middle ringed by a trail along the outer edge. The birds in the field are incredibly abundant, as were the different flowers and bushes. In addition there are multiple benches along the trail where you can sit and enjoy the view of the bay.
Parking is ample if not abundant, and the visitor center is beautiful and clean. All in all a fantastic place to spend an afternoon.
